Bronze 12" Shakyamuni Buddha Rupa

Shakyamuni Buddha the historical founder of Buddhism lived 2,500 years ago as a human being who awakened his mind, developed his full potential and taught others how to do the same. Any being who does likewise is also considered a Buddha, for there are many Buddhas, not just one.

When Shakyamuni Buddha was on the verge of ultimate Enlightenment, he asked the Earth to bear witness. To indicate this, he touched the Earth with his right hand as witness to his complete Enlightenment.

A mudra in Buddhist iconography is a body posture or gesture with special meaning. The earth witness mudra is also called the Bhumi-sparsha ("gesture of touching the earth") mudra. This mudra represents unshakability or steadfastness. The mudra also symbolizes the union of skillful means, symbolized by the right hand touching the earth, and wisdom, symbolized by the left hand on the lap in a meditation position.
